TSB to issue safety recommendation and concern following investigation of 2017 uncontrolled movement in Melville, Saskatchewan

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) will release its investigation report (R17W0267) on the December 2017 uncontrolled movement and employee fatality at the Canadian National Railway Company Melville Yard in Saskatchewan. The report contains one safety recommendation and one Board safety concern. Spokespeople will be available for media interviews upon its release.

The TSB is also releasing a video statement, which details the factors in the occurrence and findings.

Rail transportation safety investigation R18W0133

The occurrence

On 29 May 2018, a Canadian Pacific train proceeding east on the Carberry Subdivison near Winnipeg, Manitoba, derailed 13 intermodal cars, consisting of 25 platforms and 49 containers. One of those cars was transporting 3 containers loaded with fireworks. At the time of the occurrence, the wind was blowing at 90km/h. No injuries were reported. The TSB is investigating.

The occurrence

On , at approximately 1440 Eastern Standard Time, a snow removal track unit that was proceeding westward on the south track of the Vaudreuil Subdivision struck a vehicle at the Woodland Avenue public crossing at Mile 12.15 in Beaconsfield, Quebec. The crossing was equipped with flashing lights, bell and gates. Emergency services responded and provided treatment to one vehicle occupant who sustained minor injuries.
